Thailand and New Zealand Sign MoUs, Announce Strategic Partnership in 2026
Thailand and New Zealand have announced plans to upgrade their relationship to a "Strategic Partnership" in 2026, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
The decision was made during a meeting between Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his New Zealand counterpart Christopher Luxon at Government House in Bangkok.
Two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed, including one on education between Thailand's Office of the Basic Education Commission and New Zealand's Massey University, and another on supply, repair, and maintenance support between Thai Aviation Industries Co Ltd and New Zealand's NZSkydive Limited.
Thailand and New Zealand held a signing ceremony for a new agreement, marking the first visit of a New Zealand Prime Minister to Thailand in 11 years.
Both leaders had productive discussions and exchanged views with a New Zealand business delegation.
They aim to strengthen cooperation and expand partnership in areas such as security, trade, science, education, tourism, and people-to-people ties, with plans to elevate the relationship to a strategic partnership.
Mr. Luxon, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, announced the establishment of a "Prime Minister's Fellowship" to suggest ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship between New Zealand and China in the next two years, leading up to 2026.
Both countries also pledged to collaborate on addressing transnational crimes such as human and drug trafficking, enhancing cyber-security and counter-terrorism efforts, and countering violent extremism.
