Songkran Waste Cleanup: 51,000 Tonnes Collected in Bangkok, Khao San Road Generates 162 Tonnes
During the Songkran festivities in Bangkok, an estimated 51,000 tonnes of waste were generated, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
This is a 1,000 tonne increase from the same period last year.
Khao San Road, a popular Songkran venue, produced 58 tonnes of waste, with an additional 104 tonnes left in the surrounding areas.
The BMA dispatched six water trucks and city officials to clean up Khao San Road starting at 4am on Tuesday.
On Tuesday morning, Chadchart, the Bangkok governor, visited the cleaning staff on Khao San Road to oversee their work and show support to officials.
He advised Phra Nakhon district officials to improve crowd management for next year's water splashing activities by zoning hawkers and redirecting crowds through side sois to prevent congestion.
Chadchart also announced plans to install more smart poles in the area, which offer lighting, CCTV surveillance, 5G access points, SOS intercoms, and environmental sensors to enhance tourists' experience and address pollution concerns.
