NBTC Lowers Starting Prices and Extends Deadline for Unsold Satellite Orbital Slots Auction
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) in Thailand has approved an amended draft for the auction of satellite orbital slots at 50.5° East, 51° E, and 142° E.
The changes include extending the launch period for winning bidders to five years from three years and lowering starting bids.
However, the NBTC is concerned about the minimum number of bidders, as only one bid was received in the 2023 auction for these slots.
In that auction, five packages were offered, with starting prices ranging from 374 million baht to 189 million baht.
Space Tech Innovation, an affiliate of Thaicom, won the second and third packages in an auction for orbital slots by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand.
National Telecom won the fourth package, while the first and fifth packages remained unsold.
The NBTC later drafted a plan to auction off the unsold slots to prevent their cancellation by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
A source revealed that the new draft sets lower starting prices for the unsold packages, at 41 million baht for the first package and 23 million baht for the second package.
The NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) is facing a challenge in developing commercial markets due to unsold slots for the Caribbean and Middle East regions, according to a source.
The amended draft of the 900 MHz spectrum auction requires winning bidders to pay a minimum of 2.5% of their total revenue to the state.
