Myanmar Air Strike on Karen Rebel Camp: MiG-29 Bombing in Myawaddy
The Myanmar government conducted an air strike on a former army camp occupied by the Karen National Union (KNU) rebels in Myawaddy.
One MiG-29 fighter carried out the bombing against rebel positions in the Pa Song camp of the 275th infantry battalion.
The rebels had taken control of the camp and replaced the government flag with their own.
The bombing set fire to some buildings, but the number of Karen rebels killed or injured is unknown as most had sought shelter before the raid.
The Karen rebels, after seizing a camp and township, called for ethnic Karens to join their KNU force with a promise of a 5,000 baht monthly salary.
Myanmar troops sent to aid the besieged troops at Pa Song camp were repelled, resulting in heavy casualties and the injury of a Myanmar army general in rebel drone attacks.
The injured general was taken to a hospital in Yangon.
Some Myanmar troops from the 275th infantry battalion, who had been withdrawn from Pa Song camp, are now regrouping near the second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.
Thai soldiers have been put on alert at the border between Thailand's Mae Sot district and Myanmar's Myawaddy township due to ongoing conflict in Myanmar.
Despite this, traders in Mae Sot report that border trade has not been significantly impacted, with a slight decrease in the number of trucks crossing the first Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge due to safety concerns.
