Born Free USA and PETA Spearhead Historic Effort to Rescue Endangered Long-Tail Macaques
Wildlife Non-Profits Rally to Save Hundreds of Monkeys from Laboratory Exploitation
Born Free USA, in collaboration with PETA, is leading an unprecedented effort to rescue hundreds of endangered long-tail macaques from potential exploitation in laboratories. The rescue mission, initiated in response to an urgent call from PETA last September, aims to provide these primates with a lifetime sanctuary where they can live free from harm and exploitation.
Since the inception of the rescue operation, Born Free USA, PETA, and representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have worked tirelessly to coordinate the logistics of the rescue, despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks along the way. Enclosures were designed, funding needs were circulated, and a comprehensive plan was developed to ensure the safety and well-being of the rescued monkeys.
However, on March 13, 2023, Born Free received devastating news that the government had opted to relinquish responsibility for the monkeys, allowing them to be returned to the laboratories from which they were unlawfully obtained. This decision jeopardizes the welfare of these innocent animals and condemns them to a life of suffering and exploitation.
Born Free USA's Programs Director and Head of Sanctuary, Dr. Liz Tyson-Griffin, emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging supporters to join the campaign to persuade the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reconsider its decision and collaborate with the charities to ensure the monkeys are granted sanctuary.
PETA has generously pledged $1 million to support the rescue efforts, with additional contributions from the American Anti-Vivisection Society. If successful, this rescue operation would mark the largest monkey rescue in history, providing a beacon of hope for these vulnerable animals.
Born Free USA remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting wildlife and advocating for the ethical treatment of animals. The organization's primate sanctuary in Texas stands ready to welcome and provide lifelong care for the rescued monkeys, offering them a chance to live out their lives in peace and dignity.
