Bangkok Markets Reduce Food Waste and Carbon Emissions: 184 Markets Separate 75 Tonnes of Food Scraps Daily
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a campaign for nearly 200 fresh markets in Bangkok to separate food scraps from other waste.
This initiative helps reduce carbon emissions by approximately 142.5 tonnes per day and manages at least 75 tonnes of food scraps daily.
Food scraps, such as vegetables, fruit, and other edibles, can produce a foul odor, harbor germs, and contaminate nearby water sources.
Moreover, food scraps generate methane gas, which is 28 times more potent in damaging the ozone layer than carbon dioxide and contributes to the global climate crisis.
A campaign aims to reduce 75 tonnes of food waste daily from various markets in Bangkok, Thailand.
This reduction would result in a daily decrease of 142.5 tonnes in carbon emissions.
The top markets for food waste sorting are Maha Nak Market (7.83 tonnes), Klong Toey Soi 8 Market (6.77 tonnes), Yod Piman Market (4.54 tonnes), Thai Agriculture Promotion Market (4.19 tonnes), and Lad Phrao Soi 123 Market (3.27 tonnes).
Approximately half of the sorted waste is sent to farmers for use as animal feed, while 30% is used to produce fertiliser at district offices.
