Aung San Suu Kyi and Win Myint Granted House Arrest Amidst Heat Wave and Military Defeats
Aung San Suu Kyi, the jailed former leader of Myanmar, has been transferred from prison to house arrest as a health measure due to a heat wave.
The military government also granted amnesty to over 3,000 prisoners for the traditional New Year holiday.
Suu Kyi, 78, and Win Myint, the former president, were among the elderly and infirm prisoners moved out of prison due to the severe heat.
The move has not been publicly announced in Myanmar.
Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted Myanmar leader, was transferred to a new prison location.
This move comes as the military faces defeats in their fight against pro-democracy resistance and ethnic minority guerrilla forces.
The conflict began when the military overthrew the elected government in February 2021, imprisoned Suu Kyi, and suppressed nonviolent protests.
Suu Kyi is currently serving a 27-year sentence on various criminal convictions in a prison in Naypyitaw, where temperatures reached 102.2°F (39°C) on Tuesday.
Win Myint, the former president, was also serving an eight-year sentence in Taungoo.
Supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi dispute the military's allegations of electoral fraud in the 2020 election, claiming it was an attempt to tarnish her reputation and justify their seizure of power.
The military accused Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy Party of widespread fraud, but independent observers found this unconvincing.
As of now, over 20,351 people arrested on political charges since the military takeover in 2021 are still in detention, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
